While I love this clock and would love to make it, This is one of those that I will probably never make. This Domino Clock has 3 dominos and they each change to display the correct time. You’d need an arduino for each domino to keep track of it’s segment of time and to control turning on or off the white dots. The build difficulty for this project would be ★★★★★★ because not only do you need the skills to build this, you need to program, solder, know some electronics. If anyone builds this, let me know.

Getting back into adding Things I Want to Make, I’m adding an easy build. This Tea Cup – Pendant Teelight would be easy to build. Take a cheap ceramic tea cup, add a Ikea small light kit, Drill a hole in the bottom of the tea cup and boom! You have an interesting light. Make 4 of these to add over your bar, maybe use large coffee cups. This would be a fun afternoon build and one probably have a difficulty rating of ★ 1 star.

One of the things that I loved when growing up was connecting to BBSes. Each night after school I’d hook the modem up to the family phone line and start a dialing program that would cycle through all the BBSes phone numbers till I connected to one. (usually they’d run on one or two lines so they were busy until someone disconnected). Once connected, many of them would have some sort of ANSI Art to welcome you to the system.

What is ANSI Art :

ANSI art is a computer art form that was widely used at one time on BBSes. It is similar to ASCII art, but constructed from a larger set of 256 letters, numbers, and symbols — all codes found in IBM code page 437, often referred to asextended ASCII and used in MS-DOS and Unix[1] environments. ANSI art also contains special ANSI escape sequences that color text with the 16 foreground and 8 background colours offered by ANSI.SYS, an MS-DOS device driverloosely based upon the ANSI X3.64 standard for text terminals. Some ANSI artists take advantage of the cursor control sequences within ANSI X3.64 in order to create animations, commonly referred to as ANSImations. ANSI art and text files which incorporate ANSI codes carry the de facto.ANSfile extension.

While this project isn’t really that hands on, it would still be cool to have a couple of these hanging around. You can have the images printed on plexiglass, build a wooden box with a grove to slide the plexiglass into and put a light behind it. This could be finished in 2 afternoons. Difficulty level of ★★.

When in school, I was lucky enough to take an art class that taught us many different forms of art, one of those being stained glass. We spent a couple of weeks cutting glass and soldering it all together. As soon as I saw these lights I thought it would be fun to create them with LEDs and stained glass. While I’m not sure how hard it would be to wire up the insides so each lamp runs off of AC, the stained glass would be simple. Probably the hardest part of this would be deciding on the design for the light. I’ll give this a difficulty rating of 3 ★★★ since I’m not sure about the wiring.

(Edit.. a reader just sent me an email saying why don’t I just use a string of white Christmas LEDs and then I wouldn’t have to do any wiring. Great tip.. Thanks!)

I’ve been thinking of this project for awhile. What I wanted to do is take a 2 way mirror and place an LCD screen behind it. Place this in the bathroom and have it updating the morning news, traffic and weather. Well it looks as if someone has done it, but they’ve gone the extra step and added a kinect to it for motion control. I think mine will have an on/off switch and maybe protected from the moisture in the bathroom. With a difficulty level of 2 ★★ since you’re only putting pieces together, maybe talking your wife into wrecking the bathroom for a bit and adding an old laptop, this should be a quick project.. yeah that what we always think..
